Front end chatter, misfiring

Postby Alexchannell on Mon Oct 12, 2009 12:38 pm

I've never noticed the chatter before (but I might have been ignoring it). It's pretty bad when trail braking, particularly into turn 5 when running counter-clockwise. If I release the front brake the chatter immediatly stops and it doesn't have any when vertical (or close to it). I tried adjusting the tire pressure but it made no difference. Any ideas how to fix it?

The misfiring started in the endurance race and got steadily worse. It would misfire when at WOT and high RPMs. It had a new plug in it (courtesy of the Mantis).

Ohh and it's the really ratty looking KX65

Have you checked to see if your rotor is warped any? I don't know what else it could be?? I'm sure you changed or checked your fork oil and all tripple tree bolts, etc.. I don't know??

Yeah I was thinkin rotor too. prolly wouldnt be a bad idea to re-torque ur front-end.

edit: And sorry for not running the euduro race with you guys, aside from being a big woman, my knees were killing me, and the ole' lady wanted to go home. But I wont turn down an opportunity to ride the beast next week, eh?! 8)

I haven't had a chance to check anything (except that all bolts were tight). I haven't put a dial indicator on the rotor, but it doesn't feel like a warped rotor (any braking while vertical never gives any vibrations/chatter).
I'll be changing the fluid as i haven't done it since buying the bike :)

I need to get myself a slightly bigger bike...I am hiding in my cube since my legs are so sore! 6'5" and a tiny KX don't go well together (it's even smaller than root's bike).Any 17" wheeled motards out there that can still run in F2?

Any 100 to 140cc 2 valve/air cooled 4 stroke will work!

Yeah, change out that oil.. you'll be surprised to see how nasty that oil will look like when you change it. Also.. are you running the stock springs? Maybe you are pushing it past its limits... it wasn't really designed to be ran on pavement! ;)

I'm going to take another opportunity to make this about me and officially say that I have no idea what your problems are, what anyone else's problems are, what the problems are that I'm having with Max's YSR, my neighbor's lawnmower, my CB350 that I've been building for a year and a half, the old XR75 that I bought that ran perfectly until I gave it my "magic touch", how to get moving again on the unbuilt airplane in my garage, why I would even begin tackling the clutch in the Hyundai that is sitting in the driveway, or any other question that involves machines. Why? Because I'm a moron and I'd build a gallows in the basement but I'm sure the thing would fall apart when I kicked out the chair and I'd just get tangled in the rope and broken pieces of 2x4 and starve to death. Thank you.

Unless your jetting is really far out, a high-end misfire is probably a problem with the ignition. YSR CDI's and stators coils tend to exhibit this symptom when they get hot, or age poorly. Is the ignition stock or aftermarket? Inner-rotor or outer-rotor, and is the timing static or adjustable?

Good grief, Matt, now I'm depressed.

On a lighter note, do you watch It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia? There was a funny scene in one of the last episodes where Frank tried to hang himself.

Alex,

My RS85 was doing the same thing Saturday. In my case im pretty sure it was a combination of being jetted way too fat and running out of race fuel and using 87 octane pump gas. You mentioned you needed a new plug. Was the one you replaced fouled? If it was you may indeed be running rich. Also, was the plug you put in the same heat range as the one you took out?

I've never seen it. Is that the show with Tony C.'s alter-ego?

Steve, I'm not sure if the old one was fouled or just worn. Being that it was have a spark blow out issue before the plug got a lot of oil and gas on it. This time it's not as dramatic an effect. I'll throw a new plug in and see if that fixes it. I'm guessing it will. Plug heat was 1 colder than the last one that was in the bike - what Marc was running in his NSR.

Niki was talking about that in the pits the other day. Can you imagine how loud it must be on the set of that show when they all get going on each other? Another thing I think is funny is that Fred Savage (aka Kevin Arnold of The Wonder Years) is one of the producers of the show.

You mean Louie? Yeah, that's the one. You should check it out, I think you might like it.

I have a KX65 that I ride the living crap out of weekly (mine is dirt going). I've never had the dog gone thing even hiccup wrong. The Metrakit however, is a different story. When the brake pads start to wear out on my Metrakit, and it's leaned into a corner... they'll chatter under braking. It's very annoying I might add. They won't do it if it's upright. So-- I'd see if the brake pads have excessive wear, and see if the pins that hold them in place are grooved at all. I'd suspect both of which. If the pins are grooved, they can cause uneven pad wear. I hope this helps. --L*64
