Thanks a lot for the pics, Mark, You get some great shots with that little camera.

Steve - Not being the most technical person, the best way I can describe the symptom is to say that the bike felt like it was hitting little walls of air. Not quite a hesitation, per se, but a definite lack of power. Both bikes only did it at WOT and in fifth and six gears. It seemed to get worse as the race went on. Temps were fine and the weather supported our jets (168 for BD, 165 for me) so we don't think they were trying to seize. While it was happening during the race I thought it might have been my quick shifter but with BD's bike doing it too (and without a quick shifter installed) that pretty much ruled out the shifter as an option.

I'm guessing it's electrical and have starting beating my head against the wall in advance. Plug cap? Coil? CDI again? Your guess is as good as ours right now. BD's engine was fresh from top to bottom for this event as well. Mine has a little over 800 miles on the bottom end and a little over 300 miles on the top. You were missed up there by the way.

Glad to hear that everyone made it back in one piece this year. Sorry for the mechanical luck, Mark at least you won't have to worry about mechanical issues in the stone reliable spec xr class!

Was the MT125 a MX bike?

No max, it was a GP roadrace only bike, just like the RS125. However, I believe the engine was based on the CR125 dirt bike engine at that point.

J, I can't figure out what it could have been either except maybe fuel. Were you guys using fuel from the same source?

No, he was using Sunoco (?) 110 leaded and I was using C12. He was using Repsol premix and I was using 747. I hope to start troubleshooting tomorrow. Right now I'm worried the problem won't be immediately obvious and trying to recreate it is out of the question.

Max, Bill Doran can give you more/better details but I believe the progression went from teh MT125 which was a GP road racer with a dirt bike based engine to the first generation RS125 sometime in the 80s. It was bascially the same chassis from this point through 94, and had a strictly road race engine, however, I believe it utilized a few dirt bike parts. In 95 they switched over to the newer style RS with a completely different frame, and suspension as well as a new engine, and the 09s, are basically the same with a few changes throughout the years. Does this asnwer your question?

So that's what a .02 margin of victory looks like on board. Damn!

Nice find, Mark.

Here you go, Max/Matt -- a father/son build-it-yourself roadracer kit!

From an vintage roadracing BBS:

"A friend has 2 Honda MTR125 road racers for sale. Both need full rebuild, etc. to get them race ready. Bikes located in Toronto Ontario area. Great little bike for a smallish rider. Probably the lightest race bike I have ever had to lift up into my truck! Build two and have a his and hers race team, or father/son, etc. email to me parilla@nonline.net for details"

Say, what kind of wall/fence is that on the straights & turns? (especially just before coming into the front straight) I've never been to Road America, but from the video it looks like a low concrete or steel guardrail kind of construction. It looked fine for cars but a little eerie for bikes…but maybe I just couldn't tell what it was, or perhaps it's only in non-runoff areas. Looks like one hell of a track though, long-ass straights & huge sweepers. What a close finish!

The straights at Road America are enclosed with short concrete "Jersey Barriers" like you find on the Interstate during road construction, topped with very tall chain-link fence. Indy Cars push 200 mph on the straights here, so they need to keep them contained if they take flight.

There's plenty of run-off room in all the corners with big sand traps. If you watched the AMA Saturday races there in the rain, you'll note even with all the crashing, no one got into any barriers.

The long "straight" that connects the chicane to Canada Corner is the scariest for me, as the straight actually has two left-handed kinks that you're going through wide open -- probably about 160 on my bike. It is pretty much lined left and right with the concrete barriers/chain link fence. I don't even like to think about what would happen if you somehow went down there. Like, say, if your rear wheel disintegrated. Which is what I thought about every time I went through there Saturday, as we discovered Saturday morning that one of the spokes on the rear Marchesini on my Ducati was cracked completely through!   I swapped out the wheel from my rain set, but it's still hard to get that out of your mind . . .

Whew, I guess the whole world can't be lined with AirFence, especially when there's 4-wheelers out there, ready to chuck wheels & engine blocks into the crowd. Still, it's a little nerve-wracking watching that video…especially after reading this guy's account of crashing at the Isle of Man TT. Yowza! It's something all racers have to come to terms with I suppose.

But yeah, you're right, I guess it would take a pretty bizzare set of circumstances to set you that far off track in the straights.

as we discovered Saturday morning that one of the spokes on the rear Marchesini on my Ducati was cracked completely through!

I know how you feel Mark. The first time I went to Summit Point I was sitting there staring at my bike about 3 minutes before first call for my first race and found a crack in my front rotor. Now every time I am on a long straight I think "I hope my rotor isn't cracked"

Indeed, it was Jordan who pointed at the spoke on my wheel while it was on the balance stand and said, "hey, is that supposed to be like that?"
