Power shifting an NSR?

Postby dvu3 on Mon Oct 12, 2009 4:21 pm

Hi Everyone,

I have just bought an NSR for my little brother, so it seems we will joining you guys next season.

Anyways, I just want to know if it is safe to powershift (clutchless upshift) an NSR like a big bike?

Thanks

Yes, and on most downshifts also.

Indeed, the only time I use the clutch is at the start.
I don't like to discuss business on the lanai.

Ok, now, my bike was not "made in bathtub" .... what is this clutch you speak of on an NSR?

No, if you watch JR closely, he uses the clutch. Not a full-pull but he "fans" the clutch on upshifts. The place where he's getting a tenth on you is that he does a true "Powershift", meaning that he doesn't roll-off the throttle when he upshifts. Watch him and listen.....his shifts have a very distinctive sound. I could be wrong and I haven't watched him in a bit but that's what I've seen and heard.

Matt's exactly right, I use the method he described everywhere except for two corners at CRP: turns seven and nine. And the only reason I do it differently in those corners is because I need to shift right at the exit, while the bike is still on its side. So I just barely chop the throttle, grab the upshift (no clutch), and then continue with trying to twist the throttle around and around the bar

.....and I never mentioned it to anyone voluntarily. You've figured out a million little ways to go fast and for me to share those would be a weird kind of violation - up to the point where someone else brings it up for discussion. Then it is fair game. But, there are a bunch of other things that you do also that I've observed and they'll remain our "secret"....for now.

You can learn SSSSOOOOOOOOOOO much from cornerworking. Want to talk about how Kyle transitions from the brakes to the throttle? How Root moves his body on the bike on corner exit or how Kent positions himself on the bike on corner entry? How Bill positions his feet and sets his body on the bike so he makes as few movements as possible and carries tons of corner speed? Etc.

WOW... I wonder what crazy, totally not right, things you observed with me... haha!

I know you didn't mention it voluntarily and I appreciate you keeping my other little tricks a secret. Truth is, I've always had an 'open door' policy; if anybody wants to know what I do and where or wants to follow me around I'm happy to oblige. The point is to have fun. I'm not going to go all Casey Stoner on someone if they want a tow, so to speak.

I recommend following JR around if you want to know some of his secrets! ;)
I've learned a few different lines that he takes while I'm behind him... but those things I learned go out the door when he is putting the pressure on me in a race! HAHA

There's definitely NEVER been any question about that, J. I've always found you and a whole bunch of others to be exceptionally willing and helpful.

If I could follow him that would mean I'm as fast as him! I only get a split second to "observe" you guys when you go by.

Seriously, everyone I've approached has always been willing to ride at a reduced speed in practice and let me follow them.

When you're working with 7 horse, I'm not sure if anything qualifies as a "power shift".... hahaha! I always use the clutch on every shift... I pay the transmission bills. --L*64
