XR/CRF 100 Setup Guide

Postby Hundo811 » Wed Mar 20, 2013 8:34 pm

I have been getting a lot of questions about this again. I dug this up and made some minor changes! Remeber these are my suggestions, please feel free to post up something different if it works for you. Maybe it will help someone else.

Front Suspension
Rider weight
< 150# -- 20wt oil, stock springs, 2.8-3.0oz fluid
150#-175# -- Heavy wt oil, stock springs, 2.8-3.0oz fluid
175#-200# -- Heavy wt oil,1 BBR spring/ 1 stock springs, 2.8-3.0oz fluid
200# < -- Heavy wt oil,2 BBR springs, 2.8-3.0 oz fluid

Rear Suspension
-Stock Rear Shock (In good working order) It seems they work fine until they turn into a pogo stick. You will know when it goes out!
Under 215# - stock spring
Over 215# - BBR spring
Or anything you can find that fits. You are allowed to run any spring that will fit on a stock shock.

Tires
I have run on almost everything out there and the only thing that matters is personal preference. This is a pretty good list, Sorry if I left out someones favorite tire!

Bridgestone BT/45 100/90/16 fr/rr
Shinko 714 80/80/16 fr 90/80/16 rr
Pirelli ML75 2.5/16 fr 2.75/16 rr
Pirelli sport demon 100/90/16 fr/rr
Pirelli Diablo perf sport 100/80/16 fr/rr
Metzeler Lasertec Bias Sport 100/90/16 fr/rr

Carb Settings
Main Jet - 102-105
Pilot Jet - 38, If your bike is 1998 or older this is standard
Needle 1 clip up from the bottom, Honda part# 16012-KN4-A10, If your bike is 1998 or older this is standard
Air screw 2 1/2 turns out

Gearing
This depends on which tires you are running
CRP -- PIRC(BeaveRun)
Pirelli ML75 & Shinko 714,-14/48--15/46(45)

Everything Else, 13/48--14/46

Spark Plug NGK CR8HSA, CR8HIX

One thing to note about the Bridgestone BT45 is that they come in two versions "H" and "V".(speed/load rating)
Very important as the "V" version is 1 inch larger in diameter and will have a little less clearance for chain/sprocket adjustment.
Iron Pony, etc.. usually does not stock the "H" version.

As most know, I used rain tires almost the whole season last year. WARNING: they are very very soft..they actually advertise them as winter tires.
Besides the fact I'm too lazy to swap them, they are the best dirt track tires that I have found.

How many people are actually racing on the ML75's and what pressures are you running?

I have very limited time riding on them, and it's entirely possible that it's all in my head, but at 20 psi, it felt like the sidewalls were buckling on the front under even moderately aggressive cornering.

Like I said, that may all be in my head, or I may just not be used to the handling characteristics of an XR yet, but I scared myself a number of times while test riding the XR, and crashed when the front washed out on me (not that i'm necessarily blaming the tire for 100% of that...).

After going down, I upped the pressure to 30 psi to see if I could eliminate the feeling that the sidewalls were flexing. It seemed to be better, but I was riding like a *&!@# after smashing my thumb pretty good, and while 30 felt better, it's totally possible that I went up more than necessary.

Chris, I ran the ML 75's for an entire season at 20psi. The fact is they move around more than any other tire I have run, especially the rear from mid corner to exit. That said, my lap times were about the same as other tires. I say just run them and get used to it or buy BT45's

Yes he is. They were great in the rain, great on dirt, but sketchy on dry pavement!

What pressures are the sweet spot on the bt45? I did 26 F/R today and it got loose several times but was only 50 out too.

17-19 psi

17 seems to be my go to pressure.

So do you want the "H" or the "V"? BT45?

I'm on the H rated tires front and rear but some people run the 8 rated front in the V rated rear while others still run V rated front and rear

So does the rear tire get mounted correctly or backward of the arrow? Cause it is labeled to be a front tire?
